The 8.7/15KV Medium Voltage (MV) Copper XLPE 1/3 Core Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) Power Cable is a technically advanced solution engineered for reliable medium-voltage power transmission and distribution. Designed to operate within the 8.7/15KV voltage range—where 8.7KV represents the phase-to-earth voltage and 15KV the phase-to-phase voltage—it serves as a critical link between high-voltage (HV) grid substations and low-voltage (LV) end-user systems, addressing the energy needs of industrial facilities, urban infrastructure, commercial complexes, and renewable energy projects. Its combination of high-conductivity copper conductors, durable XLPE insulation, robust SWA armouring, and flexible core configurations makes it a versatile choice for demanding MV environments. At the heart of the cable’s performance lies its high-purity copper conductors, selected for their exceptional electrical properties and mechanical stability. Copper boasts a conductivity of 58 MS/m (at 20°C) and a resistivity of 1.72×10⁻⁸ Ω·m—significantly superior to alternative materials like aluminum. This ensures minimal energy loss during transmission, even over long distances (e.g., 1–5 kilometers from a substation to an industrial park), directly reducing operational costs for utility companies and end-users. The cable is available in two core configurations to align with diverse MV network designs: 1-core configuration: Optimized for single-phase MV transmission, such as connecting HV/LV transformers in rural substations or powering isolated industrial equipment (e.g., large pumps in wastewater treatment plants). This design simplifies single-circuit setups, reduces installation complexity, and minimizes material waste in applications where three-phase power is unnecessary. 3-core configuration: The standard for most MV grids, tailored for three-phase power distribution—the industry norm for delivering consistent, high-capacity power to urban areas, commercial hubs (airports, shopping malls), and large manufacturing facilities. By integrating three insulated cores into a single cable, it eliminates the need for separate single-core cables, reduces clutter in ducting or trenches, and cuts down on installation time and labor costs. A defining feature of the cable is its cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which outperforms traditional MV insulation materials (e.g., oil-impregnated paper, rubber) in durability, safety, and environmental resilience. XLPE exhibits a high dielectric strength of 20–30 kV/mm, enabling it to safely withstand the 8.7/15KV voltage rating without electrical breakdown—even in harsh conditions, such as high humidity (95% RH) or extreme temperature fluctuations (operating range: -40°C to +90°C). This makes the cable suitable for use in diverse climates, from freezing northern regions to hot, tropical areas. Additionally, XLPE resists aging, chemical corrosion (from industrial solvents, soil contaminants), and UV radiation, extending the cable’s service life to 20+ years—far longer than conventional insulations, which typically require replacement every 10–15 years. Unlike oil-based insulations, XLPE is also non-toxic and non-flammable (meeting IEC 60332 flame-retardant standards), reducing fire risks in densely populated or critical infrastructure areas. To ensure mechanical durability in demanding installation environments, the cable is equipped with steel wire armouring (SWA). This layer consists of galvanized steel wires twisted helically around the insulated core(s), creating a robust barrier against external threats: Impact resistance: Shields the cable from damage caused by construction activities (e.g., accidental digging, heavy machinery vibration) or falling debris in industrial settings. Compression resistance: Withstands soil pressure in underground installations (up to 100 kPa) and weight from overhead structures, preventing deformation of the insulated cores. Rodent and pest protection: Steel is impervious to gnawing by rodents (rats, mice) or termites—a common issue with unarmoured or plastic-armoured cables, which can lead to short circuits and power outages. The SWA layer also enhances tensile strength, allowing the cable to be pulled through long ducts (up to 100 meters) during installation without stretching or breaking—eliminating the need for additional protective conduits and reducing overall project costs. The cable is offered in eight carefully calibrated cross-sectional area (CSA) sizes—25mm², 35mm², 50mm², 70mm², 120mm², 150mm², 185mm², and 240mm²—each tailored to specific current-carrying capacities (ampacity) and power transmission demands: Smaller CSA sizes (25mm²–70mm²): Ideal for low-to-medium current applications. The 25mm² size (ampacity ~65A at 25°C) is suitable for rural electrification projects, powering small communities or remote agricultural equipment. The 50mm² (ampacity ~110A) and 70mm² (ampacity ~180A) sizes are used for distributing power in residential neighborhoods or small industrial parks, transmitting electricity from local substations to LV distribution boards that supply homes or small businesses. Larger CSA sizes (120mm²–240mm²): Designed for high-current MV scenarios. The 120mm² (ampacity ~220A) and 150mm² (ampacity ~260A) sizes are employed in commercial hubs, such as airports or shopping malls, to power high-demand systems like HVAC, lighting, and elevators. The 185mm² (ampacity ~290A) and 240mm² (ampacity ~320A) sizes are reserved for heavy-duty industrial use—e.g., transmitting power from 15KV substations to large manufacturing plants with high-load machinery (motors, compressors) or connecting renewable energy facilities (wind farms, solar parks) to the MV grid, where they efficiently carry the high current generated by multiple turbines or panels. Compliance with international standards is a cornerstone of the cable’s design, ensuring interoperability with global MV infrastructure and meeting strict safety requirements. It adheres to benchmarks such as IEC 60502-2 (for MV power cables with XLPE insulation), IEC 60092 (for electrical installations in ships and offshore structures), and regional standards like ANSI/UL 1581 (North America) and BS 6622 (UK). These standards govern critical parameters, including insulation thickness, conductor purity, SWA strength, and flame resistance, ensuring the cable operates safely and reliably in diverse applications. Compliance also simplifies regulatory approval processes for projects, reducing delays and providing end-users with confidence in the cable’s performance. In summary, the 8.7/15KV MV Copper XLPE 1/3 Core SWA Armoured Power Cable is a high-performance, adaptable solution for medium-voltage power transmission. Its copper conductors deliver efficient energy transfer, XLPE insulation ensures long-term durability and safety, SWA armouring provides robust mechanical protection, and its broad size range caters to varied current demands. Whether used in underground urban grids, industrial facilities, renewable energy projects, or critical infrastructure, this cable consistently delivers reliable, cost-effective performance—making it a vital component in modern MV power networks worldwide.
